The Epiphany season in the Christian church is usually between four and nine weeks long. It begins on January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany, and ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The length of the season depends on the date of Easter. Explanation

  • The word epiphany means "to show" or "to reveal".
  • The season celebrates Jesus' divinity and his coming to Earth as the Son of God.
  • The season's gospel stories include the wedding at Cana, the calling of the disciples, and other miracles and teachings of Jesus.
  • The last Sunday of Epiphany is often celebrated as Transfiguration Sunday.

Different traditions

  • In some Protestant traditions, Epiphany season ends on Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent.
  • In the Roman Catholic tradition, Epiphany is celebrated as a single day.
  • In some Eastern churches, Epiphany commemorates Jesus' baptism.
